10-29-2024 - SewThankful Tracy's initial pattern review after finishing 1st Tiny Treat Basket:
The last 3 images shown in the gallery that have the SewThankful.com signature on them show my very first finished Tiny Treat Basket. I chose to just make one before preparing all my materials to make the suggested 4.
First: I love the finished little basket. It's really super, super cute and I definitely want to make MORE! But. I am so glad I only made one because I made a rookie mistake when printing out the template image pieces. It's CRITICALLY IMPORTANT to go to the print dialogue box and select custom and set the size to 100%. I can't find that in the instructions anywhere nor on the pattern template images sheet. So, that means I did not do that for this first one and of course the templates printed smaller than they should have. I discovered this after I got the pocket sewn on and tried to fit a credit card (gift card size) and it wouldn't fit. So I went in and brought up the template images page and reprinted at custom size: 100% and voila! The pieces are significantly larger. Once I have a chance to finish re-make my template pieces (I like to use cardboard from cereal boxes) in the correct size, I am pretty confident the pocket will be perfectly sized. BUT all was not lost in this one that I have made! I decided I could make it work by folding a $5 and sliding it in the pocket. I mean, what kiddo wouldn't want a little cash with their treats?
Second: I chose not to quilt my fabric because I personally don't feel it adds significantly to the design enhancement for projects such as this. Faster is better for me. Others may feel differently and that's awesome.
Third: I definitely will not cut the pocket out of the main fabric that has fusible fleece fused to it as indicated in the instructions. That tiny pocket does NOT need to have fusible fleece for interfacing. For simply holding a gift card or similar, it may not even need any interfacing at all. I have a couple ideas in mind and I will write about that and share more pics in my full review this weekend.
11-3-2024 - Tracy's review after making more and experimenting a bit:
Gift Card Pocket: After re-making the template pieces using images printed at custom - 100% (explained in initial review above), the pockets are perfectly sized and capable of holding a standard gift card. I experimented using SF101 interfacing on the pocket and that also worked fine though I really don't feel that it added anything substantially noticeable to the finished project. I also experimented using NO interfacing in the pocket and I felt that worked perfectly fine for this project due to its small size and how the pocket will be used. As an ornamental/display item, the gift card pocket should not get a ton of active use or wear and tear compared to a wallet pocket or purse pocket, for example. I felt it looked fine. So in the future I will simply make the pocket out of fabric (no interfacing).
Handle: While the use of ribbon to make the handle is interesting, I really didn't love that process and I wasn't attached to needing that shirred ribbon look so I tried a couple different things. I made my own strap piece out of fabric using a 2 inch x 8 inch strip of fabric. On the snow man basket I left the chenille stem out. On the green Christmas Holly & Ivy Basket, I inserted a chenille stem to give it more form. I actually like both of these variations. I will write a quick tutorial for my method of creating the handle this coming week and add it here.
Attaching the handle: While the instructions suggest hot glue as the primary method of attaching the handle, I don't care for using hot glue on projects I've invested time into sewing. Stitching on is mentioned in the instructions for the ribbon handle but not clarified as to exactly how so on my first basket that used ribbon for making the handle I hand tacked it on and it was a complete pain in the butt. So, when I made the fabric handles, I figured out a fast way to attach the handle by machine. I will write a quick tutorial showing that this week and post it below here.
Overall: I really love the cute finished baskets and I'm looking forward to making several more as gifts and extras to have on hand for last minute gifts. The pattern pieces work nicely AS LONG AS you make sure to open your print dialogue box and select the CUSTOM - 100% setting. I would rate the clarity of instructions and pictures at about a 3.5 out of 5. While it's not too difficult to figure out a couple of the steps it would be really helpful if the images within the pattern were clickable to extra large size images that you could clearly see a couple things clearly. Yes, I know you can zoom in but the picture quality becomes blurry.
For these reasons, I personally recommend cutting and making ONLY ONE basket the first time you sew this project and MAKE NOTES -- instead of doing all 4 that are suggested right off the bat. Once you've completed one basket, you will have a better idea of how they go together and what you like/don't like. Then using that experience, the rest will be easier and faster. It's definitely a great gift and decorating idea and once you figure out how you like yours best, they got together fast & easy.
